Charlie Devenish is the younger son of Sir John and Lady Devenish and younger brother of Will, the current baronet. Charlie is twenty-two years old and aims to take orders next spring. He has an eternally optimistic character, is well-disposed towards everyone and has an unfortunate taste in blonde women who are out of his league.
Charlie is played by Rose.
Family
Sir John Devenish (deceased) - father
Lady Devenish - mother
Sir William Devenish - brother
Background
Charlie was brought up always knowing he was the younger son, and shirking responsibility. He was spared from being involved in the financial problems of his family and had a happy childhood. Applebrook is near to Rotherham and he and Will grew up with the Fitzgerald children, close as siblings. As time passed, Will and Lady Olivia Fitzgerald grew closer and it is possible that they might marry in the future. Charlie has never had any romantic interest in either of the girls: he is too much in awe of Viola, and treats Olivia as a little sister.
At Eton, Charlie was always a keen and well-behaved pupil, but he did not excel at any academic discipline nor did he have a very long attention span. He made friends easily however and enjoyed some success in sports. His best friend was always Tristan Edgeworth.
After Sir John's death, it seemed like there would not be enough money to see Charlie through university, but he was supported by Lord Rotherham and studied Theology at Oxford. He graduated the previous year and hopes to take orders the following spring. The Earl has sent him to London to give him some worldly experience. That his daughter Lady Viola is there to keep an eye on him is a happy coincidence. Of course, Charlie sees it more as having been sent to keep an eye on Viola himself.
Relationships
Friends
Lady Viola Fitzgerald: Charlie sees Viola as a rather scary older sister. He is used to being dominated by her and takes it with a pinch of salt. They're good friends really.
Lady Olivia Fitzgerald: Closer in age and temperament than Viola, Charlie and Olivia get on very well indeed, know each other very well and are as close as siblings.
Robert Fitzgerald: Despite being a lot younger than Robbie, Charlie was always part of these childhood games and the two get along well.
Lord Latimer: Charlie's best friend from school, and still a close friend.
Lady Cassandra Edgeworth: Another good childhood friend. They get on particularly well when also with Olivia.
Annabelle Beacham: One of Charlie's new favourite people in London. They seem to share an optimistic outlook on the world. Charlie believes she is in love with him.
Katherine Winter: Charlie only danced with the younger Miss Winter once, but they got on very well.
Susannah Hutchinson: Another dance partner Charlie liked.
Charlotte Tolson: Has the most amazing tales about India! He also likes her.
Benedict DeLancey: Agreeable gentleman he's met several times round London.
Blake Pritchard, Lord Emerson: Helped him out in a scrape in a a walking stick shop. Very much obliged to him.
Thomas Leith: A new friend but Charlie has warmed to him and considers him a good pal on a short acquaintance.
Nathaniel Scarborough: Charlie met Mr. Scarborough at the same time as Mr. Leith and took to him equally.
Crushes
Elise Hampton: Charlie is madly in love with Miss Hampton.
Enemies
You have to be joking!
